Well they were the crucial part of the Ottoman armed forces and they were mostly of Slavic origin (mainly from the Balkans). It's interesting that the Ottoman Empire started falling apart somewhere around the time when volunteers of Muslim origin (=Turks) started enrolling as Janissaries :)
