Frankly, if the next president can fix the economy, get us out of Iraq, and eliminate our dependence on petroleum, he or she can piss on the flag, for all I care. Is "patriotism" really the most important issue to you?

1) "Fixing" the economy - No president, past or future, could or can fix or control the economy. The economy is a huge, living, organism, for lack of a better word, that is dependent upon billions of transactions performed by billions of people worldwide. I can't think of a good analaogy right now, but I hope you get my point.
2) Get us out of Iraq - I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the president can only sign legislation passed by the House and Senate, calling for the troops to leave. That's what Pelosi and Reid promised they'd do, but so far have been unable to deliver. I made this point with Goliano the other day, in that the President really can't "change" anything. The agents of change in our government is the House/Senate and the Supreme Court. The President can only sign or veto legislation that makes it to his desk.
3)Eliminate our dependence on petroleum - Unless Barack discovers a way to power cars, trucks, trains, planes etc with water or hydrogen, and find a way to produce all the products that are oil derivatives with something else, that's not going to happen.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day.

Let me help you Duce. The economy is a big bucking horse that we, as a nation have to stay on top of, and not just for 8 seconds. And you are correct when you say the president is not the one who keeps us upright on the horse, that would be something called the Federal Reserve. It is the private entity that was keeping us on top and successful for so long under the leadership of one Allen Greenspan. The Fed board is 5 of the most powerful men in the country now headed by Ben Bernanke, who is not instilling my confidence so far. It's just sad to me how many people latch onto these bullshit notions that the president can "fix the economy" or "stop dependence on foreign petroleum". If you want off foreign oil, then tell your tree-huggin representative to open up our own oil fields to new drilling. We have the oil right here under our nose.

SuperDave - With all due respect, the Federal Reserve doesn't control, fix, or manage the economy either. What the Fed does is distort the short and long term decision making of firms by articficially raising and lowering the interest rate. When the rates are low, projects that would have been negative NPV before, suddenly become positive. Firms borrow money in the capital markets to finance said projects. When the Fed raises the rate, the projects become negative NPV projects, the cost of funding becomes too high and firms back out of the projects. The whole thing misallocates resources and wastes time. The world and the economy would be much better off without a handful of men artifically raising and lower the cost of funds. They do no better than any handful of people would trying to manage anything so enourmously complex and intricate. It just can't be done. If people could reproduce and predict what the market would do on its own, theres no really no need to do it, but because if they don't get it right, they screw things up and since they'll never get it right, they shouldn't try.

Not that anyone cares or is reading this crap, but just in case. The FEDs actions also affect the decision making of individuals and the current housing "Crisis" is a prime example. Due to the low rates, set by the FED and Greenspan, people (who probably shouldn't have) bought houses because either they thought the rates would stay low or that they'd be able to turn around and sell the house for a nice profit (Flip That House!).
