I heard different to the computer generated thing. The news station I watched said that some of the fireworks presented of T.V. was footage from the rehearsals because the sky wasn't as clear the night of the opening ceremony, so they used older footage is some parts. I could be wrong there, but it sounds more plausible to me.

i read that it was for safety reasons. during rehearsals some of the fireworks came too close to televison helicopters so they cut those out during the o.c. and used computer generated ones. who knows. it was still a sight to see
