He is too good looking for her. bitch is terribly over rated and is only average looking and she is an average actress. This guy is good looking, charming, and extremely talented.

Hey, he cleans up nicely. He used to look like Jeremy Davies doing Charles Manson. Now he looks kind of suave, in a David Niven dipped in curry kind of way. They make a very striking couple. I bet you fucking idiots have no idea who David Niven is.

Yes, the guy has the goods. He was established long before he met Natalie. I would argue that she is using him to gain some kind of artistic credibiltiy. Dev doesn't need her, other than as a late night pin cushion. He is the real deal, not some struggling musician looking to make a name for himself be dating the latest ingenue, a la Eric Benet or Lenny Kravits, those big-dicked motherfuckers.

"He is the real deal, not some struggling musician looking to make a name for himself be dating the latest ingenue"

Funny, because that's exactly what he looks like to me.

Never heard of him before he started dating Natalie.

I checked a few videos on YouTube.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0rZI6gEYUc

He sounds like a sheep. And is he trying a little too hard to be alternative?

Certainly not impressed with his voice so far. I get the impression he's twice the struggling musician Lenny Kravitz is. But maybe I missed something?

If you haven't heard of him until now that's because you listen to crappy top 40 radio or shitty boy bands or lame hip-hop. Guy has been making one record after the next for the last six years, has been written about in magazines other than Spin and Rolling Stone, and if constantly in rotation on college radio, like KXLU in Los Angeles. So the fact the you don't know who he is a you problem, not because the guy isn't doing the work or getting the accolades. Michael Gira discovered him, but then again, I wouldn't expect any of you fucking idiots to know who Michael Gira is, or Swans, or Flipper, or anything that isn't like the baby puke you've been stuffing in your ears your whole life. And yeah, this is Ed Yang, who gives a fuck, I can post if I want to and if you don't like it then take your fist and stick it in your ass.

Yea, I thought you would come back with that.

I don't listen to American college radio because I don't live in America.

If you read post #21 i this thread
www.moejackson.com/2008-marco-jaric-took-adriana-lima-to-a-madonna-conce...

You'll see that I'm mostly a fan of classic rock. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc.

But I also love Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. I like Nina Simone and Janis Joplin. I like classical. I like a lot of different stuff.

I was hoping you would provide some links to or drop the names of some good tracks this guy has produced instead of telling me to stick my fist in my ass.

Oh Me Oh My and Cripple Crow are two of his best albums, especially if you like a mix of T.Rex and acoustic singersongwriter stuff, a la Dylan and Donovan. Also check out Akron/Family and Jackie-O Motherfucker and Six Organs of Admittance and Vetvier and Chalambrides and Colossal Yes if you're into Freak Folk/Classic Rock/Weird Americana. Sorry that I told you to stick your fist in your ass. That's my signature line today. I'm saying it to everyone to see what kind of reaction I'll get. So far, the reactions have not been very pleasant.

Avenging Fist Translat-o-matic says:

"He totally blows. The only people who listen to him are music nerds in Elvis Costello glasses who get off on being all like, 'You don't know who he is? Wow, you must still be listening to the New Kids on the Block.' and you are all like 'Whatever, you were the guy wearing their t-shirt in eighth grade and since you are a dude that is really fucked up.' His music is so crappy they have to make up new categories to encompass the sheer suck factor."

I bet you're a big Panic at the Disco fan, huh? I bet you like to listen to Linkin Park or Nickelback and think about all thos inspiring life situations that you find yourself in where, if you had the chance to do it over again, you would do it different, be the real you, take a chance and make it gold.

Your name suits you pefectly, Mediocrity, although the only thing you should avenge is the fist that sits firmly planted in your rectum. My fist? Perhaps. My dad's? We can roll with that one too, boogaloo. But just because you don't know about something doesn't mean it's not good. But I bet there's a lot you don't know about, which means, by your definition, that the whole world is lame, and thus, you are not. Oh, I'm sure you stopped reading already. Because I'm boring and stupid and an asshole. Check, check, and check. Bwahahahahah! Douche.

Ey...

You live and die on Pitchfork don't you? You realize that trying to cop "music cred" by dropping bands of dubious musical talent whose only claim to fame is their calculated obscurity makes you a douche just like our ol' boy Dev here, right?

Sorry, kid, Dev is a super-douche. Too much affectation, too much bullshit, too much self-aware emo posing.. fucker is trying way, way, way too hard to be "hip". Songs in Spanish? How many of his listeners even understand what the hell he's singing about there? In short, if he has to try - he really isn't.

Perhaps, he should observe Stephen Malkmus, legitimately the coolest motherfucker in music today. That is effortless "cool".

But I digress, back to Dev: I dig the songs in Spanish, and I can see how those bored emo liberal-arts majoring, vegan-friendly, psuedo-hippie, psuedo-intellectual poseur upper-middle-class chicks from elite Eastern institutions of higher education would dig a muppet of Dev's caliber.. are you one of them? Natalie Portman most definitely is. However, I surmise they dig him not necessarily because his music is good (it really isn't) but because they use crap like this to try and find some kind of identity as "cultural arbiter of all things hip" or "I'm not a corporate slave" and drop condescending name-dropper bullshit like "you must listen to Top 40" or "you must like Nickleback" because we have the temerity to call you on your crap, and gasp! state our own fucking opinion. I'll bet you name-check wankers like Zizek and Jamison to sound all smart and shit, right? Face it, sometimes there is wisdom in the crowd.

Perhaps you should go back and check that bar scene in "Good Will Hunting" - don't be that guy (or girl as the case may be).

So here's another opinion. Not only is Dev not good, he's not even that original. Dan Bejar (the Destroyer) and Dave Berman (of the Silver Jews) not only rocked the crazy hair and crazy beard before Dev, but he (Dan) fucking absolutely rapes him in terms of musical chops, lyrical skill (especially Dave), and talent.

DOOM HAS SPOKEN.

Pitchfork blows. Obviously you're very familiar with it if your accusing others of using it as their bible. I'm a Blastitude man. And I still read 'zines, like Z-Gun. Destroyer is the biz, you're right. Streethawk is one of my faves. Saw Bejar play with Frog Eyes a few years back at Spaceland. Before that I was living in Santa Cruz, enjoying the guitar chaos of Residual Echoes and Comets before they got fat. And it's Jameson. Frederic Jameson. Sounds like you could stand to read a little Slavoj, Enjoy your symptom. Better yet, read some Virilio. Art of the Motor. It won't kill you. And check out Pink Reason and Brimstone Howl. You won't find that recommended on Pitchfork when you read it during your bowl of Chex manana. Burp.

As far as the trying to be "hip" by writing Spanish songs, he's fucking Venezuelan. It's not trying to be hip, it's using the language he used first.

I don't mind if you don't like him, but not everybody is out to be hip.

I like his music a lot, but he does look slightly douchey in this picture. Natalie Portman's jacket is enviable.

Actually, Ey, I spent several years as an audio technician for one of the major equipment manufacturers repairing amplifiers for some of the biggest acts in the world. My specialty was antique equipment, which is favored for the private use of many professionals although a few still record and tour with old stuff. My record collection would make your eyes melt and it ranges from 16s of recorded radio shows (yeah... 16 2/3 was a speed for recording, usually voice stuff) to shaped vinyl 45s. I have a framed copy of the soundtrack to Billy Jack hanging over my desk because Billy Jack is super bad ass, unlike Dev Barnhart (nice look, by the way, didn't the Jonas Borthers even abandon that as looking played out). I have three all tube record players in my living room alone. Dealt with a TRILLION guys who had to explain why good music was good music (and why it was never going to be accepted by the banal masses)... don't have to anymore.

I spent years having to pretend like I was into whoever's shit was on my workbench. Once I was on CC Deville's tourbus, when I tried to get out of going to a Poison show using my kids as an excuse and his porn star looking girlfriend offered to babysit for me. That was awkward. But I don't work there anymore. I went to Shanghai, trained some people and settled into my new, better life. You know why it is better? I don't have to pretend like I like shitty music anymore. When something sucks, I can say it sucks and not have to worry that someone's roadie or manager is going to walk by and hear me shit on them. I don't have to walk by a Hole gold album anymore on the way to the pisser and scream inside "WHY DO THEY HAVE GOLD ALBUMS?!?! THEY SUCK! ALL THEIR SONGS ARE TWO MINUTES LONGER THAN THEY ARE COOL!" I don't like Hole, I don't like Poison and I don't like Dev Barnhart. Hell, I don't even like his name.

You want to know what I like? I saw Sinatra and Johnny Cash in concert before they died (not together, though that would have kicked ass). They kicked ass in their own ways. When Frank died I went on a three day bender, the last time in my life I was out of control drunk. When I got married, we went to Vegas to see Sam Butera do a floor show. He signed my copy of Apache! and wished me a long, happy marriage (it's worked so far). I would stab a drifter to have a drink with Keely Smith. Of the thousands of amps I fixed, I only got all excited and fanboy three times. Brian Setzer, Social Distortion and the Misfits were all that made me get all stupid and tell my friends. I am an old punk who grew up in the 1980s and that is what I like. Oh yeah, I also got excited for Puffy Amiyumi because they do the Teen Titans theme song and that impressed my kids and they hooked Guitar Wolf into the extended version and that impressed me. My iPod is full of old school country, big band jazz, underground rap, badass 70s soul and an assload of 1980s hardcore. And old radio shows. I have something like 20,000 hours of radio shows so they won't even fit into my iPod. That's what I like. I like Prince and Run DMC and Black Flag and George Burns and Gracie Allen, but I don't like this guy. I don't know who the hell Panic at the Disco is, but they sound pretty gay to me (and not gay in a creative, entertaining So Graham Norton way). Linkin Park's road manager was a dick to me once so they can all rot in hell. I'm going to go drink a beer now and then go back to work re-mastering vintage audio for release and you can go back to planning your Internet radio station of Naturalismo indie folk music or rockabilly skank or whatever the hell it is that the unmediocre listen to these days while they drink shitty beer, wear ironic t-shirts and blazers with carefully arranged "badges" of their favorite 80s pop acts to bag on and talk down about the unsophisticated. I hope www.crappyassmusic.tv is still available for you 'cause that'll help you connect with your people.

AND DOOM: how you gonna dis the Muppets by calling Dev one of them? I would listen to Rowlff the Dog (and hell yeah, he is in my iPod too) over this art school crooner anyday.

Thanks for making me uncomfortable...

Im a turmoil of contradictions. I have a fascination for devendra's music. Not necessarily for its originality, but for the raw and earthy sound he created. That said, I am very dissapointed with his new attitude. I have met him a couple of times through out his career and I gotta say that this guy has turned into an abominal douchebag. He started as a free loving musician who's energy and vibe was contagious, but now.......I had the pleasure of being part of a crowd at a private performance, and got to see first hand how narcissitic and selective his attitude had become. I did not want to belive that fame and money would change the attitude of someone who sang such beautiful lyrics, but then again for many money makes the world go round. However, as a musician I still love his music and will not stop to listen even though i despise his new personality.
As for him being with Natalie Portman, I think she's a great actress with versatile talent, however a bit narcissitic , so maybe they go well together, after all you tend to pick mates with the same characteristics. I have met other celebrities who were more humble and down to earth than what they now are. Pity, Pity....
