Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise's Tropic Thunder 'offensive to the disabled'
Dozens of demonstrators from organisations including the Special Olympics and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) waved placards outside the cinema in Los Angeles as the actors walked down the red carpet.
Stiller plays an actor who has the title role in a film called Simple Jack, which carries the tagline: "Once upon a time... there was a retard."
The intention is to spoof Hollywood actors who believe playing a disabled character will guarantee them an Oscar nod. But the joke has backfired.
"We fell that the use of the word 'retard' throughout the film, 15 or more times, is done without any regard for the dignity of people with intellectual disabilities. The caricatures of people with intellectual disabilities are almost hateful, and we want this to be the beginning of the end. We want this to be the end of Hollywood treating this population as the butt of jokes," said Tim Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics disability group. [Telegraph]

I don't even care that Tom Cruise may be crazy in his personal life, I don't like an actor for their personal life I like them for their performances and the movies they are in; and Tom Cruise has been in some of my favorite movies, so I actually don't have a problem with the guy at all.
People need to lay off him. It's become cool to jump of the bandwagon and not like him.
Just like alot of people who criticize George Bush only do so because it's popular and they really aren't educated on why they don't like him. They're simply repeating what some celebrity said. I'm not saying it's everyone, but there are alot of people. Here in Australia I hear young people say they don't like him, and when I ask why, all they can say is, because he's stupid. I don't know much about his policy's living in Australia so I haven't really formed a major opinion on the guy, but I do empathize with how difficult it is to be the President of the most powerful and influential country in the world. Any decision you make will be met with outcry.
