Tyra Banks & Other Models Celebrate Italian Vogue's "Black Issue"
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 around evening with martini & women in hand by Moe
Photo Credit: CARLOS VILA/ANDERSON/bauergriffiItalian Vogue's "Black Issue" is the first issue of any major international fashion publication featuring black models and content throughout. Tyra hooked up with many current and hasbeen models to commemorate the epic issue earlier today in NYC.
So, is this black issue to make up for the PR debacle caused by the LeBron James & Gisele cover from earlier this year?

And no it's not a PR stunt, notice that it's ITALIAN Vogue that did it. American Vogue would never recognize African American beauty.

That's because all the black guys stole them off the newsstands.

No, there isn't lol I live in Canada. I've been to a few bookstores and they're either sold out or the big one in the Eaton Centre straight up told me they're not going to sell it because it's sold out from the manufacturer.

If you truly are black, I highly doubt you live in Canada. Canada does not allow blacks. If any blacks enter the Mounties send them back over the Ambassador Bridge. I know I'm black and those Canucks did it to me and my homies.

As a proud black woman I am disgusted that these models feel the need to chemically treat their hair to get white girl looks. Shame on them. Shame.

So I straighten mine. Does that mean I'm not a proud black woman? Honey, it's more manageable this way. We get enough judgment from the world. Support from each other would be nicer.

Its just fucking hair...people can wear their hair any way they want to. I have seen white women wear their hair curly because they wanted to do something different with their hair. The same goes for black women. People wear their hair different ways because they want to, it does not mean they are trying to be white.

No, it's only racist when it's a white person. We blacks can say whatever we want. It's kind of like when 54% of whites say they'll vote for McCain, they're racists, but when 97% of blacks say they'll vote for Obama that's ok. Get with the program!
Now back to the fun stuff....GOSSIP!!!!!

You could consider that point of view; BUT! if the "quarter black/green-eyed/chemically treated/colored hair women" Bugs you and is considered "Un-pure" then why do 80% of Rap music sales account for 14-32 year old White, suburban men and women??? Why do Caucasians want to talk Urban rather then standard English, wear their hats sideways, their [baggy] pants on their hips, pimp-walk, and gesticulate like a rapper?? I'll wager you even act like this yourself (although you'll emphatically deny it.), and have a few Rap cd's yourself.
It is like it is, let people be people. Change is good.

I'm white and I wear baggy pants on my hips and my hat side ways slightly, and it's got nothing to do with emulating rappers or black people, it's got to do with I skateboard and it's just how we've always dressed (not everyone, there's no unifying style, but that is one aspect of it). That is not uniquely Black.
Separately from that I do listen to rap and do have C.D.'s. I like good music, regardless of genre. Have 50 cent and vast majority of southern rappers, and much of the MTV shit (ala souljaboy). Favorite rappers/groups. Biggie (no 1.), Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kwali, Mos Def, Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest. I'll stop now there's plenty more. I hate it when I get labelled and wanting to be black if I'm listening to rap, yet the next five songs that play after a rap song will be Lep Zeplin, Modest Mouse, Queen, or Coldplay or something like that. I don't label a black person as wanting to be white if the listen to Frankie Valli.
I hate Tyra Banks though, and it's got nothing to do with race I'll add before someone vilifies me for that. It's because she's a insecure, self-centre, phony; who acts like she's some insightful, educated authority on everything. Personally IF i was African American I'd be most annoyed that she acts like she speaks for all African Americans. Infact I get annoyed when people do that for any group.

the whole concept is disturbing to me, sorry. Why is it needed? Why are there black entertainment award shows, black music awards, blacks only beauty contests, etc. etc. I don't see them being excluded from the all accepting Academy awards, American music awards, Miss America, and anything else. Where are the all White's only Awards or contests or television networks to show white Anglo European features and talents? This insistance on having their own black contests only results in more separation in America, less chance of acceptance, or of being in the 'melting pot' that made America strong for the 20th century. Sorry for the rant, but I see no sense in this separate issue at all.
Reply to this Comment
Well, I see your point and I don't. The reason they made the issue is because Vogue HAD become a magazine showcasing only European features and models. This was a retaliation to that. I feel that the black community has formed their own entertainment to celebrate themselves because they don't get any/enough representation from mainstream and what representation is there, is mostly negative portrayals. That being said, it's nothing compared to the lack of representation that the Asian community gets in the media which I find, frankly, unsettling. In conclusion, I just wish American media was more representative of the American population, which right now stands at 40% minorities. Minorities get more play in Canadian media and we're only 16% of the population here. That just makes no sense.

I don't even necessarily want to see more black people in the media, I just want to see more diversity, period. Where are all the beautiful Indian women on television? Because I know they exist! I see them all the time! And middle eastern, and all the rest...

In all fairness, I remember 7 Black people with speaking roles on Seinfeld during it's 9 year run -- Kramer's lawyer Jackie Childs, the lady who refused the muffin bottoms from Elaine, the lady who owned Cinco de Mayo and Puta de Mayo, George's co-worker at Yankee stadium, the marathon runner from Jamaica, the family George crashed in on to watch a video rental, and the guy who parked cars on Jerry's block for $50 a month. Never bothered to watch the others you've listed.

So were any of these people main characters would you say? And were there ever any Asian characters on the show? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the shows - they're good shows! - I just think it would be nice to see some more diversity on all of them. And it would be nice to see a black person on a show who wasn't "the thug" "the wise one" aka the voice of God a la James Earl Jones or Morgan Freeman, or "the fat and/or bossy lady." In my humble opinion, it would be nice if black people in mainstream media were used as something other than a token or a stereotype/caricature, if there was some balance. I would rather not be portrayed at all (which is close to happening, actually) than constantly be portrayed as some stereotype. Perhaps it's too much to ask. I mean, this is America we're talking about. I'll just have to tune into Footballers Wives from BBC.
Reply to this Comment
Actually, that list was to show how little diversity there was on Seinfeld. I could only remember one Black character by name, Jackie Childs, cuz he was the only recurring one on the show -- a parody of Johnny Cochran. So, IOW, we agree.

I've never watched it but they did launch it for the first time here in like '96 or something. I avoid such drivel, unless it's in small, censored, Top 40 portions.

and I thought I knew my Seinfeld episodes.... But Seinfeld, 90210, etc. were about a certain segment of society in NYC and LA. They were not shows intended to ignore the other races. Look how hard Jerry tried to help 'Babu' get his Pakistani restaurant to be successful! Is it much different an effort from Bernie Mac Show or many many other UPN black television show that were directed to blacks and about blacks?
Reply to this Comment
Ideally, there would be no need for shows about for and about "blacks" and shows about "whites" that are intended for everyone to watch (hence, mainstream television). Ideally, there can be a multicultural cast (and I don't mean just black people, white people and one or 2 Hispanic people) and that can be your average show, period. That would be nice. S'all I'm sayin'.

I didn't see the Bernie Mac Show as a show directed towards black people. It was a semi autobiographical show. Should black ass Bernie Mac have tried to pretend he was a white dude? Every time Bernie addressed the camera, what were his words? "America,..." Not "Black America,.." or "Only Black people in America..." The shows you speak about on UPN showed a slice of life for those particular black people, just like the majority of shows on the tube display a slice of life for those particular white people. What's wrong with people wanting to see stories coming from people that look like them? If I were of Asian descent and forced to watch broadcast TV I'd be pissed. Who would I watch? Dude from Heroes?

There are only White TV stations. . . They're called ABC, CBS, NBC, and every other network that barely acknowledges Blacks and other minorities, unless they are criminals or playing sports.
This whole world is catered to Whites. Even "fleshtone" band-aids are made to resemble White skin. White is normal, therefore other minorities have to create their own niches, because the "normal" niche ignores most of us, most of the time. Get it?

Agree JT. I just ignore that blacks-only section of the big-booty' filled magazine rack, or flip the channel off the meaningless blacks-only TV shows, and search out normal civilized entertainment. As for network TV intended for whites, I do seem to recall just about every major network has many black news anchors these days. The difference is they are capable of speaking to America in fully understandable English, without the senselessly passed on black-speak that won't make it in a successful business or educational life. For example, "Axed' instead of 'asked' is so NOT a speech impediment. It is a culturally acquired misspeak that many make no effort to remove or improve on.

It's obvious there is still inequality and racism in the world and I agree that work still needs to be done. But at the same time, I think the people put there fighting for political correctness and anti-discrimination are often the ones creating a further divide because, black and white, gay and straight.
By turning an issue between two people of different color into a race thing, and not just because the individuals don't like each other, you are perpetuating the notion that he's black and he's white; I'd better censor what I say around this person because I don't want to be seen as racist when in reality I'm not. I think that's just as bad because you're still treating an individual different based on race. Spike Lee is one of those people, who turns everything into a matter of race, and I get the vibe that Tyra Banks is like that too.
I understand where he's coming from because in his life-time he did experience racism. I just hope the next generation doesn't inherent the bitterness of the the previous generation (again that's not everyone, or even the majority who are bitter)
There's nothing I hate more than having to sensor my language and speech for fear people construe me and homophobic or racist or sexist, etc. I a guy, and one who's a bit rough around the edges, and at times I use derogatory slurs towards people, but it's always directed at the individual and their traits, not at the entire race they happen to be. With that I'm also careful in that, I won't say something racist to a complete stranger, but to my best friend I'll often, because he knows me and he does the same thing back.
There will always be discrimination in the world, I just hope one day it isn't based on entire races, or stereotypes, but individuals. (That sounds bad but I think that's the best it will ever be.)
I got a bit off track here. I think this magazine edition is good thing.

I think generally speaking, people can tell when you're just shooting the shit and when you're an actual racist. Maybe not so much on the internet though. And yes, Spike Lee is a douchebag. He's worse than a douchebag, he's a douchebag with a platform and a microphone. Kind of like George Bush but with a camera instead of cue cards.

What has Spike Lee ever lied about to be called a douchebag. Writers write from their experiences. He's no Jesse Jackson, he's an artist and a damn good one who sticks to the issues and doesn't exaggerate.

there is no other group of people that I know that can find soooo many reasons to shout 'racism' for the most innocent comment or statement. You need to rehearse your thoughts before making any comment in white-to black conversations. So sad that they just can't get over the 'reparations thing and just MOVE ON. 'Get over it' is my cry, and get on with your life without crying about the slavery issue that didn't even happen to their great-grandparents let alone their lives directly. Find something else to do with your time instead of returning to a sad history and ancient African rites.

Nobody is talking about reparations in this thread. It reads like you have a few issues yourself.
I'm so sick of ignorant motherfuckers talking about get over it.
An entire class of people were denied equal access to education, jobs, housing, etcetera, for over three centuries. This has an impact on their children, and their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren. If you can't see the impact this has had then there is no hope for you.
Until there is more diversity in all areas of American society, there will never be 'equality' Until more non-white people are in positions of power, such as judges, police chiefs, senators, CEO, and the like, non-white people will always want their voices heard. And one biracial president ain't gonna change shit.
So fuck you and your " ust get over it" and get me my great grandfathers forty acres and a mule. Who knows what seeds of greatness could have been sown from those fields!

i just wish people wouldn't be so quick to call someone racist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
seriously, i am one of the most unracist people EVER!!!!!!!!!! i am white and PREFER non-white people as my friends. i respect blacks, asian, hispanics, arabs, native americans, and multi racial people just as much as i respect whites. but it is so annoying that white people are not allowed to say ANYTHING anymore. if we make a simple comment about a person of a certain race, everyone will freak out and call us racist when we are not!!!
i just wish people would stop bringing race into things!!!!!!!!!!!! if I insult a black person, its not because they are BLACK that i think they are ugly or stupid or whatever, its just because they ARE ugly or stupid as a PERSON regadless of race, or if I make a joke about a black or asian, everyone will call me RACIST but then blacks asians or anyone who is not white can say ANYTHING they want about white people and no one will call them racist.
i know white people have done some horrible things in the past but that doesnt mean we must be punished for what other people did in the past!!!!!!!! and YES there ARE white people who are racist present day but guess what there are non-white people who are racist as well!!!!!!!!! we are not the only ones!!!!!!!!!!!
i am not racist and i am 100% sure of that. i am not a closet racist with my real opinions hidden, i just am NOT so i wish people would cut white people some slack and not act like we are all racist. Learn to not take things so seriously stop "reading between the lines"....sometimes i am so afraid to make simple comments because i think people will twist my words and make it seem like i meant something i did not.

You do benefit from the racism of your ancestors though. Just like imagine if your grandfather invented . . . post-it notes and my grandfather not only stole you grandfather's idea, he stole your grandfather's idea and blackballed him and got everybody else to blackball your entire family for years and years, affecting the economic, educational, and financial status of your family. Wouldn't you feel fucked up if I'm parading around in a leer jet, acting like nothing happened, while you and your family still struggle to survive?
Reply to this Comment
I'm not defending "political correctness", but I am saying that Whites have pretty much had a free ride in America for 500 years, on the backs of Native Americans and African-Americans. Being sensitive to our plight that we didn't ask for is the least you could do.
Reply to this Comment
who cares? thats not an excuse to hate a white person or consider them racist just because of what their ancestors did. i have NOTHING to do with what my ancestors did.
besides, my ancestors come from europe, i am only 3rd generation american so NONE of my ancestors were here in america during the time of slavery. no one in my family is a racist, not even from hundreds of years ago, but even if they WERE, you have NO right to hold that against me because its not my fault.
there are just as many black racists as whites and they are just as bad as the white racists. it doesnt matter what happened years ago, the people today are of a NEW generation and are not affected by that so there is no reason for a black person to be racist OR a white person to be racist. Racists of any race are just as bad.
people should be able to make comments about other races without being called racist automatically.
as i said before, stop reading between the lines and trying to make something out of absolutely NOTHING!
if i say something negative about a black person, it is NOT because they are black, it is because they are a bad PERSON regardless of color.
Reply to this Comment
If you really believe that, you're ignorant. Fear and ignorance are the foundations of racism, so you're at least half-way there.
Reply to this Comment
wtf??? i'm not ignorant. but who the fuck cares if white people hundreds of years ago were racist?? that has NOTHING to do with me. just because people of the same race as me were racist and did horrible things, doesn't mean i am racist too. it is illogical to connect me to that crap.
My grandmother died in the holocaust, so please tell me who i should blame and hate???
man i hate people who victimize themselves.... just because you are black and your ancestors suffered doesn't mean YOU are a victim and should have something against white people. slavery did not affect you in any way just like the holocaust did not affect me in any way.
its been way too long since any of that shit happened and its time to get over it. you can't possibly blame white people of new generations for what happened to your ancestors many generations ago. its just not fair.
Reply to this Comment
Well, I agree with you wholeheartedly, 100%. I think it's time to forget about the past and turn a new chapter. Divisiveness is something I simply do not understand. For me, slavery, wtf is that? I live in the here and now, not 150 years ago or more. I'm more concerned about present-day injustices like the fact that some white lady running Italian Vogue was pissed enough that no designers wanted to take on "ethnics" as they were calling them that she felt the need to make an all-black issue of Italian Vogue to make a point. I would like to see change happen in big and small ways today then whine, bitch and moan about the past. I would like to see some ditzy black and Asian and Iranian chicks on "The Hills" from time to time... I know they're out there! Hillary Banks, ftw! I mean, the show is fake anyway, why not throw one of those out there to be Lauren's new "friend" instead of having a single brunette represent diversity? I think we're achieving diversity in the workplace for the people willing to work hard for it. Let's take it all the way now.

Who's crying about 150 years ago?
MLK was marching 40 years ago, a full hundred years after slavery was over, why? Because the cops are still shooting innocent, unarmed Black men in the streets. The justice systems, educational systems, and employment sectors were still and are still discriminating against minorities.
Anybody who thinks that it's about "150 years ago" is an idiot. It's about everything that's happened and is continuing to happen. Hell, even Oprah & Tyra Banks have complained about facing racism and they're rich and famous.
Reply to this Comment
So correct you are Johnny. Just why there is a need for 'reparations', or a need to still cry 'foul' for events that even their grandparents never experienced, that's the continued problem. I am also one to cry 'Get over it', NOW. This is where history and so called 'culture' has gone wrong. How about accepting the mixture of events and opportunities that are uniquely American? Become a real American, not dwelling on your racial history or culture for a lifetime. This is even more true for the anti-American religious fanatics of Islam who dare to come here, live here and hate us. Want to change OUR successful life here! I say definately go back home to your sand castles and fix things there, keep your 8th century lifestyle beliefs THERE, and stay out of the land of the free which they obviously do not respect and only want to rob of our technology and success, all in the name of religion. Such a sad life goal.

Just a little example...
CNN recently aired a special about being black in America. One of the most interesting but, non-surprising things I saw was from a Princeton researcher. She found that most employers would hire a white convicted felon, over a black college graduate. And it's a well know fact that people with 'black" names automatically have their resume's discarded.
So in this land of the free, I'm not allowed to have whatever name I want for fear of being dismissed and disrespected just because of the color of my skin. Don't even start talking about people from the Middle East. Since 9/11, they're all terrorist to certain people in this country.

Personally, you don't affect me one bit, so you can quit assuming I'm claiming some victim pass. However, on a community level, you're no less dangerous than a KKK member, cuz you're ignorant to the reality of the situation. You, and anyone else who believes the past hasn't affected the present, are fools. None of this can be dealt with by simply "getting over it." Without addressing the genesis of this disparity that you and yours simply write off as "cultural", nothing will change. But that's probably cool with you, since you're not on the receiving end of the bullshit.

Devil, you are an idiot, and your kind of mentality is what keeps us all down. Less than 1% of Americans have virtually all the wealth, the rest of the whites are in the same boat as everyone else. And if you did a little research, you'd find that former slaveowning families didn't become wealthy legacy families with all the capital.
Those with all then money want blacks to have this generalized idea that it's "whites" keeping them down, whites that it's Mexican immigrants keeping them down, and they want everyone to think that gays and atheists are the biggest threats to America, they want everyone distracted so no one realizes that those at the top are thieves stealing from us all, that the middle and lower classes have common interests and enough voting power to start a revolution.

No, you're the fuckin' idiot.
The statistics speak for themselves. 3/4ths of the drug trade involves White people, but 3/4ths of the people in jail for drugs are Black. Why? Because the police only look for drugs on Black people, therefore, even though less than 15% of the drug using/abusing public is Black, most of the people who go to jail for it are Black.
Don't tell me that I'm the one who's ignorant. There is White privilege that has been proven again and again and again. How many times can they take hidden cameras into stores and show that White people can actually steal while the Blacks are getting harrassed by security?
How many times can you see the statistics that show that people with "Black" names don't get the jobs that they are equally qualified with Whites for?
How many times do innocent Black men have to be convicted by all-White juries, only to be found innocent 15, 20 years later, before you idiots understand that White privilege isn't just about who's "rich" and who isn't.
I know everybody's getting screwed, but to act as if everybody is screwed on the same level is inaccurate. You will find no data, no evidence that doesn't show that Blacks are discriminated against on every single level possible be it in education, financially, in the justice system, or in real estate.
Use that computer for something other than jacking off and do your research retard!!!

the girl saying "bitch" in the first pic is really pretty.. I want to see more of her.
Tyra is looking hideous, weirdly pale, tranny-like, and I've seen better made dresses from Kmart..

tyra looks...hmm not that great

Tyra has that bitch expression that can drive a man crazy.

this thread is long and pointless. let people have their own opinions.
there are less racists out there than people may think

When I go about my business everyday, that's what I'm thinking, that there are fewer racists out there than people may think. Then I go online and am reminded, "Oh yeah, people are two-faced. As long as they can remain anonymous, they will show their true colours."

Amen. Maybe things are different in Canada, but I'm in Houston, Texas which is a big ol country city. Just up the road apiece in a town called Jasper, some good ol' boys chained a black man behind a pickup truck and dragged him around until his head popped clean off. One of these murderers even knew the man, James Byrd, that they killed. This was just 10 years ago.
Some people like to talk about black people being racist, but when is the last time you saw or hear of a black person killing a white person just because they were white? Most black criminals prey on other black folk.
So for all the racist cra**as and thuggish ni**as, I keep my concealed handgun permit current, and my Glock 9mm close to my person when I'm out in public.

This is an epic disaster. And I'm talking about Tyra's jello body, not the fascinating sociopolitical commentary pervading this thread.
Shimmering jello bodies transcend race. Run a few laps, disgusting fatass.
I'd pork the other chicks though...

No-one's probably reading this anymore, but I came to my final conclusion about Spike Lee when he ran his mouth off as the Clint Eastwood calling him a racist for not representing African Americans in Flags of our Fathers.

JESUS TAP DANCING CHRIST! wtf is wrong with this thread?!?!?!?!
There is only one race- HUMAN. Somehow it seems like this is a very difficult concept for some people to grasp.
Adding minorities* to advertisements just for diversity is absolute politically correct BS. True tolerance accepts everyone for what they are- human, they couldn't be bothered about race in anyway whatsoever.
* I've seen Asian people represent this, which makes no sense. The majority of the world's population is Asian... there's more to the world than where you live.

she can cry all she wants but this bitch is fat...page 2, first pic...that black dress she is wearing is still not making her look slim...she looks like a big lump in a black sack
Reply to this Comment
and the chick behind her in the same pic has the ugliest wig ive seen in a while...it is floating on top of her head...it is clearly synthetic...and that color is so nasty...you'd think as a model, she'd be able to afford something much better

@JohnnyMak: Racism towards blacks didn't end hundreds of years ago when slavery died and with our great-great-great grand parents. Violent Racism continued well into the 20th century (see Jim Crow laws, "seperate but equal," integration). Racism in the 20th century is what led to the formation of such institutions such as Black colleges, the United Negro Fund, BET, Ebony, etc. There was a time when racism kept blacks out of colleges, and on tv or in magazines. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that our (Americans) history starts today. They neglect to look at the recent past (the 40s, 50s, 60s).
Ben, you made a lot of good points and I think that any rational person - regardless of race - can see where you were coming from.
There's nothing wrong with the race conversation. It's a good one to have. I really enjoy hearing the different points of views based on everyone's differing backgrounds.

im know im gonna get alot of hell for this but....i love tyra banks!yes shes nuts but i think she is an amazing model.

Why should you get hell for voicing your opinion? That's the trouble with the world, too many followers and not enough independent thought.

I find her beautiful too. From day one when she was a stick thin model, right up to today, with her thick thighs, phat ass, and big breasts.
I'd ride that horse like Willie Shoemaker.

Yeahhh I'm so proud to be black...That’s why I have on colored contacts dyed my hair blonde and have straighten it to look like white girl hair! It's a shame they truly aren’t proud to be black the only reason why they did this was to earn attention for themselves personally and not for the black community!
Reply to this Comment
Tyra Banks does NOT wear colored contacts; those are her natural eyes.

That girl in the blue dress does look trashy compared to the other models. Needs to learn how to dress!

I agree with that. I think everyone SHOULD be proud of their heritage, their features, and not be ashamed of who they are. I'm so proud of who I am that when I signed up on the site, I found a way to incorporate "black chick" into my name. But a real man or woman is able to appreciate the beauty and other cultures and ethnicities as well. For instance, I think it makes me a real woman to be able to look at someone like Scarlett Johannsson and say, "She is extremely beautiful. I can recognize and acknowledge her type of beauty, and understand that it does not detract or take away from my own." If you're secure in yourself, you can say that about someone with a different body type, hair colour, whatever it applies to. It goes beyond just race. Things like, "She's curvy and I'm not therefore I will call her ugly" are just childish little games. A real adult understands the beauty in variety.
Reply to this Comment
i sooooo agree with you. i noticed some people only compliment people who are similar to them. why???
i hate people who don't like variety and only find one look attractive. i mean, really, out of all the different looking people out there, its offensive to say you only find one kind attractive, even if it is just a personal opinion. A real secure adult should be able to find beauty is many things!!! a real secure adult should under the beauty in variety.
i see some people on this site who are obsessed with models and compare every regular person to a model and refuse to see beauty in anything that is not "perfect" like a supermodel. i think that is ridiculous and I think people like that actually do not know what real beauty is or appreciate real beauty.
