Miss USA & Miss Universe are beauty contests (started as a local "bathing beauty" competition.)
Miss America is a scholarship / achievement competition with more concentration on talent.
This is basically from their respective websites.
Beautiful (and talented) women have many ways to gain recognition in the world today, so it is not surprising to me that these traditional contests have become rather watered down.

The funny thing is that this is a BEAUTY pageant and the two finalists for the Miss USA contest Carrie Prejean and winner Kristen Dalton both had fake uns'...
