Why are you encouraging it? Some women are quite fit when they're pregnant and don't take it as an excuse to gorge themselves on anything edible all the time. As Leni said, don't generalize!

yes but gaining too much weight during pregnancy is totally unnecessary and can cause gestational diabetes in a woman, and so it can be harmful for the baby, it's really not necessary to gain more than 15 lbs

I agree but some women have difficulties with gaining weight when pregnant and loose weight cause of nausea, they can't help it. One of my friends was 150lbs when she got pregnant and was 138 lbs at the end of pregnancy, had a healthy 8lbs kid. I gained 7 lbs only because I changed diet and stopped eating KFC and drink pop, didn't want my baby to be fed fried chicken.

As a labor and delivery nurse I can tell you women are recommended to gain 20-25 lbs if they are of average weight before pregnancy, 25-30 if they are underweight, and only 15-20 if they are overweight.
60 lbs can actually be detrimental to the baby and mother because it can cause macrosomia, shoulder dystocia, and gestational diabetes.
