It doesn't matter whether you are 20 or 40 if you exercise and eat right your body will look just as good. There are plenty of 40 year olds out here in Southern Cal that put the 20 year olds to shame. Aging is not an excuse for not having a hard body so the "for her age" comments make no sense. I guess if you live in the middle states it's typical that people grow wider as they get older but it's not normal.

i agreed with everything you said except for the word 'normal.' true in southern cal most people of all ages are in good shape, and compared with many middle aged people in the midwest they would look 'fantastic!'
but thats not to say one way is normal and one isnt. people in good shape have a different lifestyle. one lifestyle is not more normal than the other, its just different.
however i personally agree with the mentality that age should not be an excuse to completely let yourself go. it does take more effort as one ages to stay 'in shape,' but it can be done, as you see. i do wish more americans would take some hints from people in southern cal! (or just the western part of the country entirely, really.)
but not to be cliche and blame it on the weather, but keep in mind not everywhere in the country has weather like southern cals. i do think that can play a factor in people having the desire/energy level/motivation to go out and live physically active lifestyles. when you live somewhere where you can (and do) walk around in a swimsuit every day, you'll feel the need to stay in shape. when you live somewhere where your swimsuit makes an appearance maybe twice a year, it can be easy to slip away and fall behind on the exercise thing.
i keep my 'in shape mentality' with me wherever i go. i do however become more or less self conscious depending which region of the country im currently in!
as they say its all relative.....
