Ok, mini rant, bear with me. In this day and age, with all the WIDESPREAD and PUBLIC knowledge about how unhealthy smoking is, with that understanding ingrained into even the most uneducated amongst us, how the fuck does someone START smoking? I mean, the previous generations, I sort of get it, we didn't know quite HOW bad it was, plus it has waaaay too much of a culturally accepted background of widespread usage going back hundreds of years going against the practice going extinct, just like how we treat alcohol differently from just about all other drugs, because it's so much a omnipresent part of human history. And if you're already a smoker, I get that it's super hard to quit. But I'm talking about the decisions to START, and to start relatively recently. She's what, mid 20s? So she started no more than 10 years ago. How the fuck are you dumb enough to decide to start smoking with all that she MUST have understood about it? When I was growing up, I was literally surrounded by smoking, both my parents, kids at school, just everywhere, and even then (I'm old, yeah) it was well understood that it caused cancer, heart problems, lung problems, etc etc. All the smoking around me during my youth only served to drive me AWAY from it, so that I was never tempted in the LEAST to try it.
So, the point of this long ramble: How are young people of today actually deciding to START smoking? It's not even "cool" like it used to be, it's pretty much universally reviled (well, at least it in California where I live), and yet, young people still start smoking. I just don't get it. It's. So. Retarded!

I feel exactly the same way. Most of my family smoked, lots of kids at my school smoked but I've always hated it. I used to cry for my mom to stop smoking when I was a little kid because I hated it so much and knew how bad it was.
It's mind boggling just how dumb and influential people are.
