Let me make a confession here: I work in the film industry - part time, at least – and so it gives me no pleasure to deride the failure of anyone’s movie or television show. I know firsthand just how much work it takes to make even a very bad movie. Except for Battlefield Earth, I can really think of no movie I have been glad to see fall on its face at the box office. (Remember this when you post comments about how “evil” critics are and how all we do is type and complain . . . type and complain . . . some of us do commiserate with our fellow showbizzers).
But flop some films must. And 2011 saw some big nosedives, though none apparently quite as big as Disney’s Mars Needs Moms. It seems obvious in retrospect that a movie with such a title wouldn’t be a box office bonanza, but of course the 3D blinders must have had some studio executive panting with excitement. An Avatar for kids! Why not? Oh, so many reasons, really . . .
All told, Mars Needs Moms was made on a budget of $150 million. It ended up grossing less than $39 million. And that doesn’t even figure in all the advertising and marketing costs. Yeowch.
But, if you ask me, the biggest and bombiest bomb of the year was probably the hopelessly hapless The Big Year which was announced with much fanfare but came and went in half a blink. Starring those comedy veterans Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, it was made on a budget of $41 million – or as most studios would call it, chump change. What’d it earn back? A paltry $7 million. The lowest gross for any major studio release of the year. Even the godawful I Don’t Know How She Does It made $30 million on a budget of $24 million. That movie made a profit and The Big Year did not! Woe unto the comedy gods, I say.
For those who are counting, yes, the big surefire box office hits known as Superhero Popcorn 3D Action Flicks also bit the dust, namely Green Lantern and Conan the Barbarian. Lantern just barely made back its production cost while Conan earned only half its budget back. I hope Warner Bros. has already optioned whatever J.K. Rowling is writing at the moment . . . cuz they gonna need it!
The year’s biggest disappointments at the box office were as follows (budget figures followed by actual gross):
1.Mars Needs Moms - $150 million/$38.9 million
2.Sucker Punch - $82 million/ $89 million
3.Arthur - $40 million/ $45 million
4.Green Lantern - $200 million/ $219 million
5.Cowboys & Aliens - $163 million/ $174 million
6.Glee: The 3D Concert Movie - $9 million/ $18 million
7.Conan the Barbarian - $90 million/$48 million
8.I Don't Know How She Does It - $24 million/$30.5 million
9.The Thing - $38 million/ $27 million
10.The Big Year - $41 million/ $7.4 million
11.The Rum Diary - $45 million/ $21.5 million
12.Anonymous - $30 million/ $14.7 million
13.Tower Heist- $75 million/ $134 million
14.Happy Feet Two - $135 million/ $122 million
15.New Year's Eve - $56 million/$91 million

I had the "pleasure" to watch Moms, while watching some kids...omg what were they thinking greenlighting that?
As to hope movies fail, I did hope that Arthur would fail, partyly for my love of the orginals and partly for the casting of Brand, who while I find funny in stand up, I just cant see in a scripted role like that.

I'm glad The Green Lantern tanked. Ryan Reynolds just isn't leading-man material. Same thing goes for New Year's Eve, a stupid ensemble movie based around a lame idea.

caitie,i did that because i have to dumb it down, for the 'smart" person.the "smart" that was too stupid to post her papers. and then gets angry at me for not posting them based on what *you* thought i would do.(and how many times have o told *you* your thought on me are wrong ??)
