"Chronicle" Tops the Box Office with $22 Million Opening

It was a tight race this weekend - and I don't just mean between the Patriots and the Giants. Chronicle managed to just barely squeak by The Woman in Black to take the top spot at the box office this super bowl weekend. So if you're a Patriots or a Harry Potter fan, it wasn't a great weekend for you. Just don't tell that hothead Giselle . . .

Chronicle opened to fairly positive reviews and (thanks to many a teen across the land) took in an impressive $22 million opening haul, just besting The Woman in Black which took in $21 million. As has been the recurrent theme of every weekend since the beginning of the year, box office results were up substantially over last year: 37% up over last year, to be specific.

The big disappointment this weekend was Big Miracle (you know, that inspirational real-life whale movie you've been seeing trailers for for much too long now). Even though it stars names like Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski, the film came in a disappointing fourth in its opening weekend, behind last week's top earner, The Grey.

The top ten films this weekend were as follows:

4. "Big Miracle" : $8.5 million.
5. "Underworld: Awakening": $5.6 million
6. "One for the Money": $5.3 million
7. "Red Tails": $5 million
8. "The Descendants": $4.6 million
9. "Man on a Ledge": $4.5 million
10. "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close": $3.9 million
