Inside the Tube: "Modern Family" Edition -"Me? Jealous?" - (Season 3, Episode 14)

It would seem (on paper, at least) that Gloria and Cam would be the closest of soul sisters when living together. Well . . . not quite.

Cam and Mitchell move in with Jay and Gloria while their house is being fumigated. Jay spends most of his time tormenting his son with corny lawyer jokes, while Cam and Gloria – instead of doing each other’s hair, shopping for Lily, or making over-the-top gestured reactions to every day situations – begin to butt heads. Turns out, there can only be one diva in the house.

Cam rearranges Gloria’s kitchen so that “it makes sense”. Gloria then fixes Lily’s hair because it’s “broken”. And so the one-upping goes, until the two house-spouses have a mini face-off in Gloria's kitchen. It’s all very well choreographed to some snazzy Latin guitar music that leads to an impromptu salsa dance (perhaps while making actual salsa?). In the end, they come to understand that each was simply highlighting the insecurities of the other: Cam made Gloria feel like an inadequate homemaker while Gloria made Cam sensitive to the fact that Lily doesn’t have a mother. See, it was just a silly misunderstanding. And cue the “Awwwww!”

Greg Kinnear, for his part, played an overly affectionate real estate honcho whose business Phil is dying for. So much so that Phil doesn’t seem to mind this strange man constantly planting his lips on Claire. But then he does something that breaks the camel’s back. And it doesn’t involve Claire on her back. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: even if one accounts for Cam and Gloria, Phil is the real drama queen of the show. On the tantrums he’ll throw.

Any doubts? Just ask Betty Luke, the sassiest little girl in the Dunphy household.
