Inside the Tube: "New Girl" Edition - "The Landlord" (Season 1, Episode 12)

It pains me to say this, but I think it’s time to say the inevitable: Winston of New Girl cast fame needs to go. Don’t even try to rewrite him. Just axe the character altogether. No one has any earthly idea what he’s doing (least of all Winston himself) and his screen time only robs the show of opportunities to showcase its much more interesting and better written supporting female characters, Cece and Julia. Case in point: for the show’s twelfth episode, Winston had his eleventh pointless outing as a bouncing off point for Schmidt. Other than that, he had literally nothing else to do. Ergo, if you can’t figure who or what Winston is supposed to do or be, New Girl writers, please please PLEASE let him out of his misery and say adios.
Sexually charged zero gravity tea ceremony aside, last night’s episode was kinda funny with a good amount of creepy thrown in: Jess seems to have attracted the fancy of her bitterly mean landlord, Remy. Jess, being the ball of sunshine wrapped in sugary hugs charging toward a rainbow on the back of a unicorn that she is, thinks that he’s just being nice because people are the best.
Nick, being the curmudgeonly misanthrope that he is, tells her the landlord is only being nice to her because he wants to sleep with her. Are human beings fundamentally good or bad? How can we possibly discover the answer to this age old question? Ah yes, a three-way!
Schmidt, as has been customary for half the season, is way out his breadth in the B storyline through no fault of the universe but his own: he constantly misconstrues everyday, nonsexual encounters as come-ons. But his boss, it seems, is really coming onto him. He’s so confused he asks his crush Cece how to read her signals. Long story short, Schmidt is mistaken for a rapist in the parking lot.
He would rather be Captain Underpants, methinks.
