Last night, Zidane appeared on French television to discuss his action. He didn't quite explain it, except to say that Mr. Materazzi had insulted his mother and sister. "The 34-year-old wore ripped jeans with a dark green combat-style jacket," Tom Dart writes in the Times of London. "Almost camouflage gear -- aptly, since he was hiding something. He did not reveal precisely what Materazzi had said to him. The attire, modest yet militaristic and passive-aggressive, summed up Zidane's attitude: sorry that children saw the head-butt, but otherwise unrepentant." [WSJ's Daily Fix]

It really doesn't matter what Materazzi said. Guys on the pitch say a lot of awful things to shake each other off their games. It's stupid that they're investigating the incident. Are they going to start investigating every time one player says something offensive to another? Or maybe just when the comment might be "racist"? Ridiculous. They'll be spending a lot of time investigating, then.
Zizou did what he thought he had to do. He blew his temper and paid for it when France lost. Oh well.

i agree with doom. i also heard that if they find that the comments were racist, Italy may lose the title? is that possible? i also think that it is stupid that they gave him the golden ball and might now take it back. if that was such a big as to not give him the golden ball why didnt they postpone the awarding until they had settled on something. FIFA is all fucked up now too. not like all the good old days.... ahh..

that part of Zidane is now in the celebrity part not in the World Cup part of our interests. The latter is over with the head butt, if it had been Matterazzi who had headbutted, there would be no interest after full condemnation. Matterazzi has a negative aura which makes people not want to look at him. Not so, Zidane.

I heard he may lose the Golden ball trophy? The reason FIFA gave is that since he headbutted materazzi in the final, they are unclear as to how many votes he received before and after the headbutt.
Errr why did FIFA give it 2 him in the first place if all they wanted to do is take it back? They could have withheld it

does anyone actually think it would have made a difference if Zizou didn't get sent off?
1. France did not look like it was going to score in the final 10 minutes. Italy put up the brick wall and it was clear that they were playing for the penalty round.
2. So let's assume Zidane slots the PK instead of Trezeguet's miss - so you extend the PK round for a couple of extra shots. Now Zidane is totally out of the equation and it becomes Gigi Buffon v. Barthez - I think Gigi wins that battle. For France to win they had to win it on the field. Italy had the advantage in the PK round and would have probably won it anyway. Instead of the 5-3 final - It would have probably been 7-6 or something like that.
3. Even with all this, Zizou was an idiot for doing that. No matter what Materazzi told him, it's the WC Final - you've got to keep your cool - kick his ass after the match.
