Obviously, You have never been to Japan...since I've living in Tokyo, which is known for Japanese people from all over Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, There is no such thing as a typical Asian because the indigenious people to Japan are Ainu, a lot of this generation of Japanese have Korean or Chinese origin. Over 60 percent of Asian don't have the Slant eyes we characterized with Asians, and I'm not Asian. I just think it's respectful to everyone that people have their own identity through their genetic makeup.

But on other note, Kurara-chan is very attractive but she didn't get that much attention among the Japanese public because you see thousands of AVERAGE women who are in mags, videos, or sitting next to you on the subway train. She's cute but just doesn't stand out in Japan. I did not cheer for Miss Thailand because people from this country are stupid, even though the representative is wonderful. I'm working here for a while, and yesterday I went to the Paragon Cineplex, the cinema that they hoped it's the best, but it's not what they thought!! To tell you the fact, the cinema itself is ok, but the service from the ticket sellers are quite low class because only uneducated staffs have been recruited over there, and the staffs still don't have enough common sense to start the conversation with foreigners in English, the foreigners in contrast have to start it first. Okay, first off both of these ladies possess their own kind of beauty. Is it correct that Miss Japan should have won? Well, this is based soley on ones opinion, I, myself do think that she should have won because not only is she a beautiful woman but she has the brains. However this does not mean that Miss PR is "bad-looking" or "plastic" or whatever else you guys have thrown out there. The fact is why are you people (this is not directed towards everyone) making comments and nasty remarks about both of them? They are the ones that are up there trying to prove they deserve this title, although it may seem that they just stand there and look pretty, it is way more complicated than that. So give them a break, and most importantly give yourself one.

One other thing, I read somewhere above, someone had commented about how Miss Japan does not portray the "typical asian women". Firstly, there are so many asians around the world, with China alone having 1.3 Billion chinese residents. You can not possibly label what they are suppose to look like. As you should already know every country has both beautiful and not so great looking people, and with such a broad amount of asians please do not categorzie them under the ones you base your analysis off of. There are many natural-born, non-mixed asians without the incredibly slant eyes, many with normal to pretty big eyes. However big asian eyes do have a slight slant to them, which is still beautiful.

I'm not trying to say that any of your opinions are 100% incorrect, just please be careful with your words and don't make assumptions based on very little to no knowledge of the topic.

Actually, Miss Japan is very pretty and VERY representative of a typical Japanese woman. If you ever go walking down the street in Japan, especially in Tokyo, you'll see that most of the women look like they belong in a magazine (an Asian magazine). I think Miss Japan is MUCH more attractive; she seems more educated and worldly as well. Miss Puerto Rico is quite generic in appearance and seems to lack substance (esp. that picture of her zoning out when the winner was about to be announced).

afaik, there's no such surgery to unslant the eyes, i've not seen than in asian beauty magazines. basically, there are just surgeries for eyebags, "double" eyelids, all give an eyelift effect. take a look at zhang ziyi for example, i bet she did not had any eye cosmetic surgery, does hers looks unslanted i dont know. the noticeable fake, would be curly eyelashes. lol.

There are so many people who still can’t get over her loss last year (Just do a Google Blog search on Kurara Chibana and read the comments on related Youtube videos).

Although Miss Japan wins this year, I can’t help but consider this 50% of success was influenced by Kurara Chibana’s near-winning in 2006. If not for the publicity which Kurara had generated (with her personality and great intellect) without any recent major predecessor or influences since 2003’s Miss Japan who also made into the Top 5, I think Riyo Mori wouldn’t have the benefit of having the judges’ and audiences’ predisposed attention this year.

I mean it’s all about karma and sub-conscious factors, which perhaps can be defined along the line of “sublimal influences” and “rippling effects”. Because people are still so charmed by Kurara Chibana’s endearing personality, linguistic and intellectual abilities from last year that they would naturally take a great interest in this year’s Miss Japan, and see if the standard is still there or even better.

Although I am not in a position to comment about who is better, I could probably and boldly concur that Kurara Chibana is an embodiment of what a 21st century Asian female should be - Western and Asian knowledge, Asian women’s strong and independent personality, great sense of style and beauty, and not forgetting a burning passion in one’s life.

After all, how many Miss Universes could we remember for their great personalities and beauties even years after they have won and passed on the crown? I don’t think there’s many to count on fingers.

For a 1st Runner Up like Kurara Chibana who is still unforgotten in some audiences’ minds and still greatly appreciated a year after, I guess this could probably be seen as the next highest level a Miss Universe finalist can go.

Because after the one year Miss Universe reign, what the ladies have got left are their personalities and individual qualities to help them in their future careers and lives, not the 250K crown or sash. More so, if we are more interested in a Miss Universe Runner-up instead of the actual winner, can we still say Kurara Chibana has lost?

From an alternative point of view, perhaps by not winning the title has made Kurara truly and even more unforgettable in the audiences’ hearts. Although it is still early to say, but thoughout the next decade or so, when people mention Miss Japan or Miss Universe 2006, I’m pretty sure Kurara’s name will pop up followed by praises and appreciative comments.
