I've read the argument that the 'morning after pill' is not the same as abortion -- I'm not buying it. The end result is the same.

I am writing from Europe and yes, we do have those pills.
Ones that work up to three days after the act and prevent pregnancy - in France also different ones that are used for abortion.
But you can't just walk into a drugstore and buy the stuff, you need a prescription.
The side effects are pretty ugly, too.
Noone in their right minds would use it as a regular contraceptive.
The name "Plan B" is a joke, because you only need it if you didn't have a plan in the first place.
But if two teens get carried away in the heat of the moment, or if a woman is raped, it's good that a drug like this exists to prevent them from ruining their lives and some poor kid's who isn't wanted and who will probably be made aware of that (that doesn't have to happen intentionally).

I am sick of reading those rabid rantings of so-called christians who say sex is a sin, contraception is abortion, abortion is murder and everyone who doesn't believe in their god can go right to hell anyway.

jj you're right,it's an emergency contraceptive, and although there do exist the typical idiots who try to take it as normal birth control, at least in spain..the doctors have finally caught on to my idiotic compatriots plan, and never let you take with you more than two,which is necessary..and over here you don't buy them,they give'em to you at the hospital after a couple of tests and blah.

Plan B is not the same as abortion at all. It prevents pregnancy, doesn't terminate it.

Plan B is NOT ru-486, the "abortion pill" (Although I always thought RU-469 would be a better plan). Plan B keeps an egg from being released from the ovary, or keeps an egg from being fertilized. It has NO effect on an already fertilized egg attached to the uterus. So, if an egg is not fertilized, there is no murder. What about all those fertilized stem cells in fertility clinics that get destroyed every year after the parents become pregnant. Im always safe and having it available just in case something happens and not having to wait a day or more to get a prescription could be the difference between PREVENTING fertilization of the egg in the first place and blocking a fertilized egg from embedding. I think its important to be able to get it as fast as possible since people seem to be so concerned with the first hours after fertilization... making it necissary to have a prescription will make that happen more than if we can run and get it immidiatly. Everyone needs to chill out.

I believe that women have the right to spread their legs to anyone they want, have unprotected sex as often as possible, and make as many dumb decisions as they possibly can. It's fine and dandy to blame men for not wearing protection and then running at the words "I'm pregnant", but it takes two to tango, and women are the ones who end up in the predicament. In my eyes that gives the woman a chance to truly become just that, a woman. She can have the baby and raise it or have it and give it up for adoption, but I feel that women are obligated to have a child they conceive. My sister got pregnant when she was 19, with her boyfriend who is now her husband. My mother went off the deep end and insisted she get an abortion to keep her volleyball scholarship and finish college. I talked my sister out of it, and I now have a beautiful 2 year old nephew who is adored by his mother, father, and everyone who comes in to contact with him. And guess what.. she's still in school, on another scholarship, getting her engineering degree. KIDS DON'T DESTROY LIVES! Poor decisions do. And like I said before, adoption is the best option for people who don't have the capacity to be good parents. And I don't care what you think in this instance, but in cases of rape the child should still have a chance to live. If the mother can't think of raising a child conceived by rape, again, adoption. My supervisor has been trying for 7 years to get pregnant, and she and her husband are now filing for adoption, hoping that they will have a chance to give some wonderful baby a good life. There are thousands of families, even those who can conceive, that adopt, just out of the love of children.

We all obviously knew that this would be a fiery topic, and I jumped on it because of my beliefs, not my current state of pregnancy. If I conceived a child by rape, I would still have it, and yes, my husband would support my decision. I know Buck, not all situations like that end up rosey, but it's part of life. When we do right, we get rewards, when we do wrong, we get consequences. God help me but I think in cases of rape or incest, abortion could be tolerable. Very early abortion, not late-term abortion, partly because the state of mind of the victimized females towards the developing fetus could cause damage to the baby and to themselves.

However, the arguments always fall back to "what about rape or incest?" when there have been millions of aborted fetuses caused by healthy females making dumb decisions and having casual sex when they should have kept their legs closed, or at the very least made sure they wouldn't conceive. The pill is only used as an emergency if a condom breaks or a woman misses her birth control pill. And it's only 89% percent effective If taken 48 hours or up to 72 in some cases. It's dangerous to take frequently.

This just shows why this pill shouldn't be available over the counter. If this guy thinks that the pill enables you to have sex without condoms, how many other people out there think the same? We could have adults and teenagers alike being carted off to the emergency room because they're having frequent sex and popping the pill after every single time they have intercourse.

And the pill is NOT abortion. It prevents the egg from being fertilized. If the egg is already fertilized, then the pill won't do a single thing to it except for extremely rare cases. Saying the pills is equal to abortion is like saying aboriton happens everytime a woman mensurates, a man masturbates, sperm is caught in a condom, a birth control pill prevents an egg from being released...

Every individual should have control over what happens to their body. People have different value systems. I know its hard to deal with something you may strongly disagree with, but (especially as Americans) its important that we concentrate on our own lives and let others live the way they want. Believe it not, most of us have more common sense then we let on.

who the fuck are you to encourage a woman not to take preventive pregnancy measures in the case of a violent rape because some childless couples would give her rape baby a wonderful life? that is cruel and causing her to relive the atrocious nightmare that was her rape. she'd be undoubtedly traumatized and shaken up and given the option, she'll most likely choose to take Plan B. and if she decides not to take Plan B and later ends up pregnant she shouldn't have to be made guilty for needing to terminate the pregnancy. She'd be scarred for life anyway as a result of the rape and adopting out will not ease her pain.

I have used plan B in the past. I used it for emergency purposes only (However, I am aware that some people will not use this pill just for emergencies...)
When I went to the pharmacy, I was asked to fill out a form and I had to talk to a pharmacist. It cost me 40 dollars. If I had a prescription, it would have cost absolutely nothing (I live in Canada, therefore I wouldn't have to purchase the pill, I don't know if it would be free in the United States).

You get 2 pills when you use Plan B. One is to be taken immediately and the other is supposed to be taken 12 hours after the first pill was consumed. Plan B should be used within 72 hours (3 days) in order to be effective.

To say that this pill is abortion is insane. Abortion ABORTS an already fertilized egg. Plan B however STOPS an egg from becoming fertilized. How difficult is that to understand? People should be more upset with the abortion pill which is called RU-486. If you want to bitch about something, bitch about that. It makes much more sense.

*It should be noted that it can take up to 6 days after intercourse for an egg to become fertilized and it can take an additional 6 days for the egg to attach itself to the lining of the uterus, therefore, taking the pill within the first 72 hours STOPS the egg from becoming fertilized, its not killing a fertilized egg*

If you're against this pill, you may as well be against the birth control pill, which is just as easy to get. People say that people will stop using condoms because of this pill. What a joke. Ok, it's abortion (IMHO), and it's also an easy fucking way out for irresponsible people who should probably not be having sex to begin with. I am very conservative, but I also believe in women's rights. Women have the right to have sex whenever and however they want, but I think it is completely ridiculous that they should have options to weasel out of the consequences of making poor decisions.
