Yes gas station fires begin with a sparkle. Usually people getting back in their car have much more chances than others of getting a sparkle by chafing their synthetic textile. Old people are less in danger, simply because they touch the metal of their car/door when getting out thus discharging the static electricity.
This was your Mythbusters moment of the day. I love discovery channel.
Oh and Brainiac conducted some experiments on that matter too, and they were more successful at exploding their caravan (yes they hate caravans) with a cell phone. I don't know if that test was realistic...
