Maybe retarded white people want to differentiate because they speak Portuguese - which in case you haven't heard is an incredibly close variant of Spanish. In fact most native Spanish speakers can understand Portuguese and read Portuguese newspapers quite well without ever having taken a course in the language. It's that close, and vice versa.

What's more, Galician, the dialect spoken in the northwest of Spain (Galicia - where my parents were born, by the way) is pretty much the bridge language between the two. Just so you know Hispanic = culture or ancestry that comes from Hispania, Roman name for the Iberian peninsula, which last time I checked includes Portugal.

Therefore, even though she was born in Canada - Nelly Furtado can quite properly be classified as a Hispanic/ Latina.

- Everything from the USA-Mexico border down, including Brazil, where I live = latino.
- Spain = latino.
- Portugal = I don't really know. I'd say they are, but it's up to them.
- Italy = definitely latino.
- France and Romania = the languages come from Latin, but I can't see how they would be considered latino.

As an Azorean American ( island archipelago colonized by Portugal) I have struggled with my racial identity. I am sure that you recognize you are treated differenty and that it is in such a way that you know is racist. Latin Americans are mutts. they are a totally different genetic race from the European latins. When I think latino I think South Americans, not any kind of latin speaking europeans. Latinos are not the same as their European ancestors any more, we have indian (the 'natives') as well as black, european and even some arab ancestry added all together. Thats why the majority have dark hair, dark eyes and tan skin. Although it is true some Spaniards have Moorish ancestry and may look similar, but again, seperate genetic background. So I definatly think of them as totally seperate cultures. Plus Spaniards speak funny *wink* that lisp of theirs.. I hear latinos speak an older kind of spanish thats why its called Castellano, or somethin.

I totally agree with you. She used to be so cool and her music actually had some meaning behind it and originality. Now she is just a photocopy slut of every other "pop star" in L.A. People ..Nelly Furtado said many times that she is Latina. Shouldn't she know her own ancesty? Her parents names are Maria Manuela and Antonio Jose Furtado. They're both from the São Miguel Island in the Azores. Don't forget, the language of Brazil is also Portuguese. Many islands including the carribean were colonized by Europeans who brought their respective languages to the regions. Some people like to say Nelly is so tanned but Nelly herself will tell you that she's the color she is cause she's not white.
