I'm in France this semester studying at a language school and most of the kids here are Chinese. I don't know many Chinese actresses and actors, but I know Bai Ling, and I was told that she's not well-liked at all in China. I read some stuff on Bai Ling and I guess it's pretty obvious why she wouldn't be welcomed in a traditional country. She's more interesting, in all the ways that matter, than I ever would have guessed.
